DR JEAN CLAUDE GUIMDERTEAU
Jean-Claude Guimberteau M.D. is founder of the Aquitaine Hand Institute, research director and former president (2012) of the French Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
He is a member of the French Society of the Hand (GEM) and the French Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (SOFCPRE).
Dr. J.C.GUIMBERTEAU has always been fascinated throughout his surgical career by the sliding and flexibility of tissues and structures.
He was trained at the University of Bordeaux Hospital in 1968-1980. Then he did his military service in Benin (Africa) 1973-1974
From the beginning of his training, he was one of the pioneers in microsurgery and transplantation.
He took part in the first operations of reimplantations and free transfers of organs by microsurgery as an intern and then as head of clinic at the Hand and Plastic department of the University of Bordeaux (Dr AJM. Goumain and Pr J. Baudet).
In 1977, he spent 6 months as a guest member of Pr J.M.Converse in New York (USA) and Pr R. Millard in Miami (USA).
Introducing innovative concepts in hand anatomy, physiology and repair of secondary flexor tendons, he was supported for many years by Pr Cl. Verdan (Lausanne Switzerland) and Pr H.E. Kleinert. (Louisville, USA).
He was a pioneer in hand surgery by innovating a technique of flexor tendon reconstruction using vascularized islet transfers and performed the first vascularized allotransplantations of flexor tendons. 1991
This allowed him to lecture in many foreign countries for years until today and to receive foreign residents.
Fascinated by the sliding of organs, especially tendons, he undertook an exploration of the structures first with the microscope and then with the endoscope.
Confronted every day with these observations of flexibility and slippage, he had no satisfactory academic physiological and mechanical explanation.
The work of A. KAPANDJI initiated and encouraged his research.
Then the exploration and the adventure began.
